Werder Bremen: “No loyalty to the Nibelungen!” Internal discussions about Florian Kohfeldt continue

Werder Bremen is after the 1: 3 at Union Berlin in free fall towards the 2nd division. Three game days before the end of the season, the old coaching debate flares up again.

Florian Kohfeldt, who has been valued for a long time, has to reckon with his replacement as coach of Werder Bremen after a record negative series. One day after the bitter 1: 3 (0: 0) bankruptcy at Union Berlin, sports director Frank Baumann surprised with the announcement that the talks about Kohfeldt are ongoing. So far, Baumann had always spoken out in favor of Kohfeldt.

“The conviction that we can cope with the situation with Florian is still there,” said Baumann at Sky90. The club continues to analyze the current situation in the committees with and without Kohfeldt. “The result is open,” said Baumann.

Baumann made it clear that the club still appreciates the professional and human qualities of Kohfeldt. “But there is no loyalty to the Nibelung. One can also come to the conclusion that it does not fit,” said Baumann, demanding patience. The club wants to “take a day or two”.

The decision should be made by Tuesday at the latest. “Nothing will happen today,” said Baumann on Sunday afternoon after a media round. “We don’t want to be drifted because it’s an extremely important decision.”

Kohfeldt does not want to express himself publicly

Kohfeldt himself led the training on Sunday, but did not want to comment publicly. After the tactically completely unsuccessful appearance, the coach took responsibility for the fiasco on Saturday immediately after the game and asked the question of confidence.

“I’ve been with Werder for 20 years this summer,” emphasized Kohfeldt, who has been Werder’s head coach since the end of 2017. He still feels the trust of all club representatives, “but if someone has the feeling that someone else is doing better, I should be told,” said Kohfeldt, adding: “Nothing is more important than Werder Bremen.”

As long as the club management is behind him, he will give everything for green and white, the coach assured. He still feels closely connected to the club. “I will definitely not run away, I will fight to keep the club in the league,” the coach promised.

But that could be difficult. While the competition from the basement like 1. FC Köln or FSV Mainz 05 suddenly wins, nothing comes together at Bremen. The seventh bankruptcy in a row meant a negative record, even Schalke 04 did not manage this feat this season. Even in March it looked as if the people of Bremen had already been saved.
