VfL Wolfsburg – 1. FC Union Berlin 3-0: Brekalo show! Wolves stay on course for the Champions League

Thanks to art shooter Josip Brekalo, VfL Wolfsburg celebrated a very important victory in the battle for the Champions League places. Against the Bundesliga surprise team Union Berlin, playful wolves deservedly won 3-0 (1-0). With 60 points now, VfL consolidated third place in the table two game days before the end of the season and has the best prospects for the premier class.

A three-pack by creative player Brekalo (12./63./89.), Which is well worth seeing, ensured the success of Wolfsburg, who thus defied their negative trend. VfL had recently lost three of the previous four league games under coach Oliver Glasner, whose possible change is being speculated.

On the way to Europe, the remaining program of Lower Saxony is now extremely interesting. Sunday in a week (8.30 p.m.) it goes to RB Leipzig, on May 22nd, the FSV Mainz 05 is the final opponent.

Union, good eighth before the matchday with 46 points, will meanwhile have to fight hard for the chance of the European Cup in the final sprint. As is well known, the table seventh moves into the new Conference League, but after the zero round in Wolfsburg, the team of coach Urs Fischer must fear until the end.

In Wolfsburg, the hosts quickly set the pace on Saturday. At the beginning of Union, Glasner’s team was largely left with the ball, with which VfL created strong combinations. In a first approach, Paulo Otavio (2nd) failed early on Union goalkeeper Andreas Luthe, ten minutes later Brekalo struck. The Croatian slid a low cross from national player Ridle Baku beautifully from 18 meters into the corner.

First striker Wout Weghorst (21st) moved from an acute angle, before Luthe had to save against Maximilian Philipp (26th) in dire need. VfL should have led higher. Union was mostly only mandatory according to the standards of defense chief Marvin Friedrich. Striker Joel Pohjanpalo (30th) missed the guests’ greatest chance to date, but VfL keeper Koen Casteels parried his shot.

After the break, Union tried to invest more offensively. Wolfsburg was in good shape further back and remained extremely dangerous in the forward movement. Luthe defused a shot from 22 meters from Baku six minutes after half-time, then Philipp (60th) put a free kick on the goal net.

The VfL pushed further in front of the Unioner housing. The shiny Baku found Brekalo once again, whose shot was deflected by Christian Gentner before it struck as an arc lamp.
