UEFA threatens sanctions against clubs that support the Superliga

UEFA does not want to hear about the European Super League proposed by several of the most powerful clubs on the continent and to show its strength it has announced this Sunday that it will impose sanctions on those clubs that support the project. “UEFA, the FA, RFEF, FIGC, the Premier League, LaLiga, Serie A, but also FIFA and all the federations, we will continue united in our efforts to stop this cynical project, a project that is based on self-interest. of a few clubs at a time when society needs solidarity more than ever, ”says the organization in a statement published this Sunday.

For the clubs that support this project, UEFA prepares a harsh punishment. “As announced by FIFA and the six federations, the clubs in question will not be able to play in any other competition at national, European or world level, and their players could be deprived of the opportunity to represent their national teams,” the statement said. . “Soccer is based on open competitions and sporting merit; can not it be a different way”.

The pressure from some of the most powerful clubs in Europe to create a Super League outside of UEFA has led to the renewal of the Champions League format from 2024. The new version would have 36 participating clubs compared to 32 of the current one and with 100 more games, 225, than the 125 now. This new design of the great European club competition will be dealt with this Monday by the Executive Committee of the European body. However, the definitive support of the European Club Association (ECA), integrated into UEFA and chaired by Juventus president Andrea Agnelli, is not yet definitive.
