TSG Hoffenheim – 1. FSV Mainz 05 1: 2: M05 leaves relegation places

FSV Mainz 05 has achieved an important milestone in the fight against relegation after its strong comeback in recent weeks. Rheinhessen won 2-1 (2-1) at TSG Hoffenheim on the 26th matchday of the Bundesliga and are therefore no longer on a relegation zone for the first time since November (8th matchday).

Robert Glatzel after 27 seconds and Dominik Kohr (41st) scored for Mainz, who have only received one defeat in the past seven games. In the second half of the season, coach Bo Svensson’s team has already scored 17 points. Only Ihlas Bebou was successful for TSG (39th).

“It doesn’t matter,” Svensson replied shortly before the kick-off at DAZN when asked how important the jump from the relegation ranks was: “There are still too many games for that.” In the next three games after the international break, Mainz will face direct rivals Arminia Bielefeld, 1. FC Köln and Hertha BSC.

The ghost game in Sinsheim only played a few seconds when TSG defender Chris Richards, on loan from Bayern Munich, made a hair-raising mistake. Glatzel did not let himself be asked for long on his starting eleven debut for FSV and scored his second goal of the season.

Mainz 05: Danny Da Costa injured replaced

The Hoffenheim team, who were missing Benjamin Hübner, Ermin Bicakcic, Dennis Geiger, Havard Nordtveit, Konstantinos Stafylidis and Mijat Gacinovic, had an early chance to equalize despite their completely sleepy start, which Bebou could not use (7th).

In the 18th minute it was again the strong guests who created a great opportunity. Jonathan Burkhardt failed after Glatzel’s preparatory work on Baumann. Shortly thereafter, the Mainz winger Danny da Costa had to leave the field with a thigh injury. The loan from Eintracht Frankfurt was replaced by Daniel Brosinski.

The change didn’t change the fact that the Mainz team was clearly superior even after half an hour. The TSG hit by Bebou fell more or less out of nowhere. It was extremely deserved that Kohr headed the FSV back into the lead immediately.

At the beginning of the second round, the hosts became more active. However, St. Juste from Mainz missed the best opportunity, unable to overcome Baumann (53rd). Nevertheless, Mainz allowed themselves to be pushed more and more on the defensive as a result. In the 75th minute, the substitute Robin Quaison had the preliminary decision on the foot.
