The non-recognition of the sovereignty of Kosovo by Spain has had an impact on the broadcast of the match between the Spanish team and Kosovar, corresponding to the third day of the qualification phase for the Qatar 2022 World Cup.
Commenters from Spanish Television, with Juan Carlos Rivero at the helm, they had to find other formulas to refer to the Kosovo national team and thus follow the government line of not recognizing the state despite its independence from Serbia in 2008.
“The Kosovo Football Federation team”Rivero commented at all times, thus avoiding referring directly to the national team. Similarly, at the time of listening to the hymns, the visiting team’s was not announced as a ‘national anthem’.
On the scoreboard that was shown at all times in the broadcast of the match, the indicator for Luis Enrique’s men appeared as ‘ESP’, written in capital letters, while that of the Kosovar team appeared as ‘kos’, all written in lowercase.
Spain is one of the 27 countries of the European Union that does not recognize the sovereignty of Kosovo along with Greece -also in the group of Spain for the World Cup-, Cyprus, Slovakia and Romania
