The assistant who did not concede a legal goal to Cristiano Ronaldo in the Serbia-Portugal match (2-2), Mario diks, will not participate in this summer’s European Championship, a source from the Royal Netherlands Football Federation confirmed to Efe today.
The highest Dutch football institution expects Jan de Vries to replace Diks as lineman for the European Championship at the referee trio commanded by referee Danny Makkelieadded the same source.
The decision to dispense with the linesman is announced almost three weeks after the controversial move happened in the discount of Serbia-Portugal, when defender Stefan Mitrovic cleared a shot from Cristiano Ronaldo after the ball went over the goal line.
Diks did not raise the flag to award the goal and in the qualifying phase for the Qatar 2022 World Cup there is no video refereeing, so the action could not be reviewed. Then referee Makkelie showed Ronaldo a yellow card for his repeated protests.
The referee whistled the end of the match seconds later, the Brazilian star threw the bracelet of his team to the ground and went to the dressing room outraged.
Four days later, Makkelie informed the linesman that he would be replaced by another teammate for the following matches. “He told me that he wants to continue with another assistant because he no longer has confidence in our cooperation.”Diks told local outlet Omrop Fryslan. “I really expected more support, understanding and trust after a successful collaboration over several years,” added the lineman.
Makkelie, the referee who whistled the final of the Europa League last season, has confirmed to the Dutch press the break up with Diks, although he has refused to explain the reasons for his decision. Diks had been, along with Hessel Steegstra, Makkelie’s permanent linesman for the past few years, but for two weeks the former has been replaced by Jan de Vries.
