Return of spectators: Union Berlin and other clubs are planning a pilot project

Union Berlin is planning a pilot project for the return of spectators together with other sports clubs from the capital.

“In principle, we can confirm that we are part of the sport pilot project,” said Union spokesman Christian Arbeit on Thursday: “The sports administration has selected three sports venues: the Max-Schmeling-Halle, the Mercedes-Benz Arena and the Stadium at the Alte Försterei. “

The project is running on the basis of comparable test runs over the coming weekend in other areas of society that have been scheduled by the Senate Department for Culture. Specifically, it is about the implementation of public events with prior corona testing of the audience.

According to the work, the Senate has yet to clarify when exactly the project could start in sport. In terms of capacity, Union is aiming for a “very low four-digit number” that will be “nowhere near the 5000”.

In principle, it would also be possible to carry out the test run at Union as part of the capital city derby against Hertha BSC on April 4th. However, Arbeit emphasized that it could be “that there will be developments in the next 14 days that will not make this possible for the time being”.

Hansa Rostock wants to play in front of 777 spectators

Union had already offered corona tests to all those present at the home game against 1. FC Köln last weekend to rehearse such processes. Also with the third division club Hansa Rostock, who wants to let 777 people into the Ostseestadion on Saturday against Halleschen FC, the Eiserne are in an exchange of experiences.

According to the work, there can be no talk of normality in a possible sports pilot project in Berlin. “All of these pilot projects are far from going into a kind of regular operation afterwards. It is no different in culture either,” he said.

In addition to Union, the Füchse Berlin (handball) and Berlin Volleys (volleyball) are possible test runs for the Max-Schmeling-Halle location, while Eisbären Berlin (ice hockey) and Alba Berlin (basketball) play their home games in the Mercedes-Benz Arena.
