Real Madrid – Atalanta Bergamo 3-1: quarter-finals in the anniversary game – Kroos celebrates with Real

With a victory in the anniversary game into the next round: Toni Kroos reached the quarter-finals in his 100th Champions League appearance with Real Madrid right from the start. The 2014 world champion and the Spanish champions won the second leg of the round of 16 against Atalanta Bergamo 3-1 (1-0) and made it back to the top eight for the first time since 2018 (the highlights in the video!).

Real had already won the first leg against the Italian club led by German international Robin Gosens 1-0. Madrid striker Karim Benzema (34th) scored the opening goal on Tuesday.

This was preceded by a major mistake by Bergamos Marco Sportiello: Luka Modric intercepted an attempt by the goalkeeper, played across Benzema, and the Frenchman converted effortlessly. Captain Sergio Ramos (60th) increased by penalty. Luis Muriel (83.) shortened for Bergamo, who shortly after conceded the third goal from Marcos Asensio (85.),

The guests could have taken the lead after three minutes: Gosens’ finish from a few meters was too central, so Thibaut Courtois was able to parry the shot. Atalanta remained brave, but did not reward himself for his research start.

Real got the game better under control, with Kroos taking on the usual central role of distributing the ball. The 31-year-old is the fourth German to break the 100 mark in the eleven in the premier class. In front of him in this ranking are national goalkeepers Manuel Neuer (117), Philipp Lahm (110) and Oliver Kahn (103).

In general, the much greater experience of Madrid made itself felt on Tuesday evening. With the very ball-safe Kroos and Modric in the headquarters, the royal team kept calm and an overview even in pressure situations. They also used needle sticks in their counterattacks. Vinicius Junior (52nd) should have made it 2-0 – but after a great solo he forgave miserably. At Bergamo, Gosens (57th) had to leave the field.

Josip Ilicic, who came on for the German, made a serious mistake shortly thereafter. His bad pass ended up with Vinicius Junior, whom Rafael Toloi could only stop with a foul. Captain Ramos, who had been injured for a long time, did not miss the opportunity.
