PSG fail in Rennes – Volland and Monaco remain third

Paris St. Germain made a potentially fatal mistake in the Ligue 1 season’s final spurt. The star ensemble from the capital did not get more than 1: 1 (1: 0) at Stade Rennes and are now three points behind leaders OSC Lille in the title race. Two game days are still pending.

Superstar Neymar, who on Saturday extended his contract on the Seine until 2025, scored the guests’ lead with a penalty kick (45th + 5). The former Cologne Serhou Guirassy (70th) scored with a head to equalize, then PSG professional Presnel Kimpembe saw the red card (87th) after an over-hard start.

Lille (79 points) are now four points in the remaining two games of the season to perfect the fifth championship title in the club’s history. PSG (76) is second ahead of top club AS Monaco (74) with ex-international Kevin Volland.

Niko Kovac’s team celebrated with a 1-0 (1-0) win at Stade Reims an immensely important victory in the fight for the Champions League places and thus defended third place just ahead of rivals Olympique Lyon, against the Monaco for a week had previously lost (2: 3). Eliot Matazo (20th) scored decisive, Monaco’s lead is one point.

Only third place entitles them to qualify for the premier class, Monaco would start fourth in the Europa League.
