The new sports director Peter Knäbel expects FC Schalke, which is about to be relegated, in three years “in the Bundesliga, with financial stability”. In an interview with the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung, the 54-year-old stated: “Most people want us to move up again. In three years we have to be stable enough that we have made it.”
In the summer he expects “a transfer market that will be like never before. I don’t think it’s serious to set goals in advance. But what I absolutely ask of us is that we have ambitions.”
The team is facing a huge upheaval because many contracts do not apply to the 2nd Bundesliga or various players earn a lot of money that the heavily indebted club will no longer be able to handle.
Recently, however, the further commitment of the 37-year-old Klaas-Jan Huntelaar was discussed. Knäbel announced talks with the Dutch center forward, but added: “I always have to keep the numbers and perspective in mind.”
Born in Witten, Knäbel has been with S04 since 2018, initially as Technical Director Development in the Knappenschmiede, and on March 31, he was promoted to succeed the dismissed Jochen Schneider on the Board of Management for Sport and Communication.
