In Salamanca, the semi-final of the Queen’s Cup, played in Valencia two weeks ago, was reissued, where Girona beat its ogre in the tournament and gained momentum towards the first cup title in its history. And, in the Würzburg pavilion, a good number of outstanding accounts were gathered, on the track and in the band. The Perfumerías coach, Roberto Íñiguez, defended his team against the accusations of “lack of honesty” launched by Alfred Julbe in the timeouts of their last confrontation. “As a person he leaves a lot to be desired. Above winning or losing are the people. And in this life you get what you give, above the titles. Some have the affection of others and others are left alone, ”Íñiguez replied the day before. And with the same desire for revenge, their players began. From the initial 0-6 to 9-20 before closing the first quarter.
The productive alternation in the direction between Silvia Domínguez and Maite Cazorla, the dominance in the rebound of Emese Hof and Katie Lou Samuelson and the good shooting percentages allowed Perfumerías to take control of the game. The 700 spectators, out of a capacity of 3,000, who were able to attend the meeting were noted then. On her way back to the stands, the blue tide witnessed effervescent staging of Perfumerías. The Uni Girona could not contain its rival neither with the successive attempts of zonal defense, nor with the struggle of Julia Reisingerova, nor with the experience of Laia Palau. Defense and rebound dominance allowed Avenida to gain momentum as the minutes passed (28-46, m. 24). But Julbe’s painting was able to resist the challenge.
Girona assumed its role of pursuer, with the patience to project the two-legged tie over the punctual impasse in the match. The appearance of Leo Rodríguez allowed Avenida to delay the rival reengagement. But Julbe’s team began to add resources and cut distances. Frida Eldebrink and Giedre Labuckiene rowed to 51-58 with six minutes to go and Sonja Vasic claimed gallons to give a new twist in the final stretch (57-63, m. 37). The aim of Karlie Samuelson (3 of 5 in triples) relieved the Salamanca team, but the income was definitely established at eight points in favor of Perfumerías. For both teams the result could have been better. On Friday the intrigue is resolved.
