Mikel Landa withdraws from the Giro d’Italia after suffering a hard fall

Spaniard Mikel Landa (Bahrain Victorious) was forced to withdraw from the Giro d’Italia after suffering a spectacular fall four kilometers from the finish line of the fifth stage between Modena and Cattolica, with a distance of 177 kilometers.

Landa, protagonist in the previous stage with his attack on arrival at Sestola, was involved in the accident with the American Joe Dombrowski (UAE Emirates) after colliding with a race marker. The Bahrain Victorious team entered the finish line after verifying that their leader could not join the race.

Everything was going with the calm anticipated for a sprint outcome when a fall 4 kilometers from the finish eliminated Mikel Landa. The illusions of the Spanish sunk into the asphalt while the Australian Caleb Ewan celebrated the stage triumph and the Italian De Marchi the maintenance of the pink jersey.

Spectacular fall after the collision with a race signaling sign that left Landa lying on the ground. His team stopped, but reached the finish line without the Basque cyclist, taken by ambulance to the hospital.

This is sometimes cycling, glory for some and disgrace for others. Landa, who the day before aroused many illusions with his attack on the way to Sestola together with Egan Bernal, said goodbye to the pink race in the worst possible way, by ambulance, waiting to know the extent of his injury.
