National player Ilkay Gündogan has won the English League Cup for the fourth time in a row with Manchester City. Team manager Pep Guardiola’s team with the formidable midfielder defeated Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 (0-0) in the final.
With eight titles in this competition, the Cityzens are now record winners together with Liverpool FC. Aymeric Laporte (82nd) met in front of 8,000 spectators at London’s Wembley Stadium.
City has two more title chances this season. In the championship, the Skyblues are five game days before the end of the season a full ten points ahead of city rivals Manchester United, in the Champions League the team is in the semi-finals against last year’s finalists Paris St. Germain.
Tottenham, which had only split up with star coach Jose Mourinho on Monday and will be looked after by ex-professional Ryan Mason until the end of the season, was faced with a veritable assault in the first half. The Spurs were lucky not only in the 26th minute, when Toby Alderweireld deflected a shot from Phil Foden against the post.
After the break, the Londoners made it much more difficult for the high favorite. It took until the 72nd minute before City was dangerous again through Gündogan. Ten minutes later, Laporte headed a free kick.
