Former Argentine international Pablo Zabaleta does not want to rule out his compatriot Lionel Messi staying at FC Barcelona beyond the summer.
“Messi is in the last year of his contract, but a new president has been elected who is keen to convince him to stay,” quoted the Sports Zabaleta.
According to the 36-year-old, a transfer from Sergio Agüero, who has recently been linked to Barca, could help.
“Bringing Agüero to Barcelona could ensure that Messi stays,” said Zabaleta, who played 58 times with La Pulga in the Albiceleste. “It was said a few weeks ago that Messi could go to Manchester City because of Aguero.”
But Agüero’s contract with the English league leaders expires at the end of the season. Talks about a possible extension are said to have not taken place to date. BVB striker Erling Haaland, among others, was recently traded as a replacement for the attacker.
