Jose Mourinho found a new job just 15 days after being kicked out at Tottenham Hotspur: The eccentric Portuguese will take over the Italian club AS Roma for the new season.
“Lo special” instead of “the special one”: Star coach Jose Mourinho has found a new club just 15 days after his dismissal at Tottenham Hotspur and is returning to the country of his greatest triumph. The eccentric Portuguese will take over the traditional Italian club AS Roma for the coming season. Mourinho, who had already worked with Inter Milan in Serie A from 2008 to 2010 and won the triple there, succeeds his compatriot Paulo Fonseca.
“We are excited and happy to welcome Jose Mourinho to the Roma family,” said club president Dan Friedkin and runner-up Ryan Friedkin: “He is a great champion who has won trophies at every level.” General manager Tiago Pinto called Mourinho, who has a contract until 2024, “one of the greatest coaches of all time”.
In Italian, “Lo Speziale” is the druggist or spice mixer, Mourinho once made a name for himself at Chelsea FC as “the special one”. But in the end, the man who sensationally led FC Porto to triumph in the Champions League in 2004 seemed just a discontinued model. At the Spurs, the 58-year-old, who also coached the world clubs Real Madrid and Manchester United and won an impressive 25 titles, only lasted 17 months.
“I can’t wait to get started,” said Mourinho. The Roma owners embodied “the same ambitions and the same drive that has always motivated me”. With them he plans to create a “winning project” in the coming years. The decisive factor for his acceptance was “the unbelievable dedication” of the fans.
AS Roma: to the top of Serie A with Mourinho
Its goal: the top – not only in Italy. Dan Friedkin, a billionaire entrepreneur and film producer from the USA, has made no secret of this since taking over the Roma for almost 600 million euros last summer.
On the way there, the powerful club boss and his son Ryan do not shy away from drastic measures. A few hours before the announcement of Mourinho’s commitment, the Roma had announced the separation from Fonseca at the end of the season. The Portuguese was brought in as the successor to Claudio Ranieri in June 2019, but was more criticized after the recent 2: 6 against Manchester United in the semi-final first leg of the Europa League.
Especially since the Roma are only seventh in Serie A. However, because Atalanta Bergamo and Juventus Turin contest the cup final, this is at least enough for a place in the new Conference League this year.
Fonseca is still allowed to end the season. “We still have some important games ahead of us,” he said. The semi-final second leg in the Europa League against ManUnited is on Thursday.
