Hertha BSC – Bayer 04 Leverkusen 3-0: Berlin outclassed the Werkself and jumped from the relegation spots

Hertha BSC set an important example in the relegation battle after a strong performance and further exacerbated the precarious situation for Bayer Leverkusen’s coach Peter Bosz. Berlin celebrated a deserved 3-0 (3-0) win against another disappointing Werkself and made a leap from relegation place to 14th place in the table.

Deyovaisio Zeefuik (4th), Matheus Cunha (26th) and Jhon Cordoba (33rd) scored the goals for the capitals who countered Leverkusen in their own stadium. For the Berliners it was only the second win under coach Pal Dardai in the eighth game.

At Bayer Leverkusen, coach Bosz should face difficult days after the biggest defeat of the season, maybe also before the replacement. The Rhinelander had several total failures in their ranks and conceded the third defeat in the last four games. With 40 points, Bayer is currently only one candidate for the Europa Conference League in sixth place.

Hertha started with a lot of effort, won the important duels in midfield. Matteo Guendouzi in particular launched dangerous attacks from eighth position. After a return leg from Dodi Lukebakio, Zeefuik held on and hit the gable. It was the first Bundesliga goal for the Dutchman that Bayer did not have on their radar at all.

Leverkusen, which had to do without Moussa Diaby for a short time because of a corona infection, was suddenly wide awake, responded with angry attacks, but striker Patrick Schick missed good opportunities with his head. Bayer seized the game, had 70 percent possession and came dangerously in front of goal, especially on the outside.

Hertha also dominated in the second half against Leverkusen

Hertha concentrated on the switching game and was successful with it. Lucas Tousart intercepted many balls in the headquarters and initiated the counter-attacks. This was also the case in the 26th minute, when Cunha completed the fast counterattack with a low shot to make it 2-0. For the Brazilian it was the first goal after more than 1000 goalless minutes.

Leverkusen acted too sloppily, lost the balls too easily. This also applied to young star Florian Wirtz, who had received an invitation to the national team for the first time. After losing the ball in the opponent’s penalty area, the Herthaners’ counter machine ran at full speed, Jhon Cordoba kept the overview in front of the goal and increased to 3-0. The last time Hertha had led so early in the Bundesliga with three goals over ten years ago.

In the second round, Hertha remained extremely dangerous with counterattacks. In the 53rd minute, Lukebakio scored the alleged 4-0, but the hit was not recognized because of handball. In return, Schick came free in front of Hertha’s goalkeeper Rune Jarstein, but the Norwegian was there with a brilliant act.

In the further course of the game, the Berliners were closer to a goal than the guests.
