FC Schalke 04 – FC Augsburg 1-0 – first victory in 92 days: Schalke are showing signs of life

With the first victory in 92 days, the Bundesliga crisis club Schalke 04 has given a sign of life – but too late in the hopeless fight to stay in the league. Even after the 1-0 (1-0) against FC Augsburg, the gap between the bottom of the table and the saving bank is too big. The fourth descent of the traditional club could already be determined on April 20 in Bielefeld.

Birthday child Suat Serdar scored the goal in the fourth minute for the first win since January 9th (4-0 against TSG Hoffenheim). It was only the second three in the last 44 (!) Bundesliga games. In doing so, the Gelsenkirchen team prevented an embarrassing novelty: They are not the first team in league history to be relegated with just one win of the season.

Serdar took advantage of a big mistake by FCA keeper Rafal Gikiewicz with his goal. “That was my mistake. The easiest ball was the most difficult. I’m sorry, I take this defeat on my head,” said the goalkeeper Sky.

Mainly the players who will accompany Schalke into the second division were already on the pitch. Eight players in the starting XI could play for the Royal Blues next year, including four who had only been promoted to the professional team earlier this season. In addition to Rio world champion Shkodran Mustafi, who was absent from the squad a week ago due to poor training performance, returnees Sead Kolasinac initially only sat on the bench.

Schalke 04 are showing signs of life

The Augsburgers, who had already prevented a defeat in stoppage time at 2-2 in the first leg, had a hard time against the deep-seated Schalke after the deficit. Only after a slip by Malick Thiaw did Marco Richter give them their first chance to score (24th).

The bottom of the table deserved to lead at break, had more possession, won the majority of tackles and had a slight increase in chances. After the break, the guests acted more forcefully: First Ruben Vargas failed to Ralf Fährmann (55th), Richter also found his master in a spectacular side pull in the Schalke goalkeeper (76th). On the other side, Huntelaar missed the 2-0 (81) with a strong free kick.
