Dayot Upamecano has revealed why he gave Bayern a basket around six years ago and initially decided to move to Salzburg. The Frenchman does not regret his decision: “My path so far has been the right one. I believe that it has paid off that I was able to gain my experiences in Liefering, Salzburg and Leipzig and gradually assert myself at an ever higher level,” said Upamecano in the kicker.
He revealed: “I wanted to take the shortest route to the top, but my mother said: No, get some experience first, then you can still do the big thing.”
At FC Bayern, Upamecano is looking forward to continuing to work with his previous coach Julian Nagelsmann, who will also be moving from Leipzig to Munich. “It wasn’t predictable when I made the move in February. But it’s nice nonetheless because I know his game philosophy and his style,” said the central defender. “Still, I’m starting from scratch like all the other players,” emphasized Upamecano.

The BVB boss had nothing but praise for the 33-year-old: “Julian Nagelsmann is a top coach. It was to be assumed that Bayern would find a good solution,” continued Watzke.
BVB has also been said to have been interested in Nagelsmann in the past. In 2018, however, the then Hoffenheim trainer did not receive any approval. The black and yellow then signed Lucien Favre, Nagelsmann later went to Lepzig.
