Former BVB scout Sven Mislintat has revealed that Borussia Dortmund was very interested in signing Kylian Mbappe (Paris Saint-Germain) a few years ago.
“It was a real shame that Kylian couldn’t get in. Kylian Mbappe was free at a certain point (2016, editor’s note), and there were many,” said Mislintat in the podcast kicker meets DAZN. He added: “But we had no chance of winning that. If you had been able to steal the (Mbappe; d. Ed.) From Monaco for free at the time, it would of course have been a mega deal.”
Instead of moving to the Ruhr area, Mbappe remained loyal to AS Monaco and even won the championship with the team from the principality in the 2016/17 season. The then rough diamond contributed 26 hits and 14 assists in 44 competitive games, making him one of the most sought-after youngsters in the world.
All the more bitter for BVB at the time: Mbappe scored a total of three goals against the Black-Yellows in the quarter-finals of the said season in the two legs and thus sealed Dortmund’s end almost single-handedly.
In the summer of 2017, Mbappe initially moved to Paris Saint-Germain on loan, a year later the capital club paid around 145 million euros to Monaco. In almost four seasons, Mbappe has scored 120 goals in 160 games for PSG across all competitions.
