Ex-Bremen Diego again Brazilian champion with Flamengo

Former Bundesliga professional Diego (35), once a playmaker at Werder Bremen and later at VfL Wolfsburg, lifted the Brazilian championship cup on Thursday for the second time in a row as captain of CR Flamengo. The top club from Rio de Janeiro successfully defended their title despite a 1: 2 defeat on the last day of the match at Sao Paulo FC with one point ahead of pursuers SC Internacional.

It was only last Sunday that the red-blacks overtook their rivals from southern Brazil with a 1-0 direct duel and stormed to the top of the table for the first time in the 2020 season, which was extended due to the corona pandemic. Flamengo’s unexpected slip, on the other hand, could not be used by Internacional, also because the alleged winning goal in the sixth minute of stoppage time after the video decision was denied due to offside in the 0-0 win against SC Corinthians.

Two other former Bundesliga professionals also contributed to the eighth league title. Ex-Munich Rafinha moved to Greece’s champions Olympiacos Piraeus during the season last August, but is now about to return. In addition, striker Bruno Henrique, who made a short guest appearance in Wolfsburg in 2016, scored Flamengo’s last goal of the season in Sao Paulo.
