Eredivise: Ajax Amsterdam celebrates 35th championship

Ajax Amsterdam has won the Dutch championship for the 35th time. Head coach Erik ten Hag’s team defeated relegation-threatened FC Emmen 4-0 (1-0) on Sunday and can no longer be ousted from the top three game days before the end of the season. The lead over PSV Eindhoven with Rio world champion Mario Götze in second place is more than 15 points in one game.

The Dutch U21 international Jurrien Timber put the record champions in the lead in the tenth minute. Former Bundesliga strikers from Eintracht Frankfurt Sebastien Haller (61st) and Devyne Rensch (66th) increased, while Werder Bremen’s former midfield engine Davy Klaassen (74th) finished.

According to rumors, the successful coach ten Hag, who was courted by numerous top clubs, had extended his contract to 2023 on Friday. The former coach of Bayern Munich’s second team had previously been linked to Bayer Leverkusen and Eintracht Frankfurt. The English top club Tottenham Hotspur is said to have been interested.
