Joachim Löw had more opportunities to switch to his last tournament as coach of the German national soccer team. As the UEFA Executive Committee decided unanimously on Wednesday, up to five substitutions are allowed per game at the pan-European championship in the summer (11 June to 11 July).
The rule that has been practiced almost everywhere since the outbreak of the corona crisis will also be applied at the final tournament of the Nations League in October.
As is customary up to now, however, the changes may only be made at three different times during one half. The IFAB had already given the green light for the exemption in May 2020.
The increase in the number of substitutions from three to five should help to better distribute the load in the denser game calendar. The rule is already practiced in Germany’s top leagues and the European Cup competitions.
