DFB team: Matthias Sammer advertises Lothar Matthäus as vice president

Due to the resignation of national coach Joachim Löw after the EM this year, there is speculation about a possible coaching engagement as Lothar Matthäus at the DFB. Matthias Sammer sees Germany’s record international player in a different position at the association.

“I think Lothar would be a good national coach. But I don’t see him there. […]: Lothar has been out of active business too long, “said Sammer in an interview with the Sports picture.

Instead, the 53-year-old advocates “that Lothar should definitely be involved in a responsible, higher-ranking position at the DFB”. Sammer is thinking of a position on the DFB Presidium.

“My instinct tells me that Lothar could do a lot there, possibly as Vice President. I could just as easily imagine Mehmet Scholl as a very opinionated, practical advisor there,” said Sammer.

He himself, however, is not available for the office of national coach, said Sammer. He was also out too long himself and was not interested in the national coaching position. “In my opinion, this position must be filled by people who are currently living this changed football and who are best suited, regardless of contract constellations,” said Sammer.

DFB team: Sammer can imagine an internal solution with Kuntz

In the course of this he named Hansi Flick, Jürgen Klopp, Thomas Tuchel, Julian Nagelsmann and Ralf Rangnick. With regard to the long-term contracts of Klopp, Tuchel, Flick and Nagelsmann, it is also conceivable for him that an association would pay a transfer fee for a coach.

Apart from that, Sammer can also imagine an internal solution with the promotion of Stefan Kuntz. “I think it’s very interesting and exciting, I still know Stefan as a player: an excellent professional, like Marcus Sorg, both of them have a great connection with the players,” he said.

Kuntz, who is currently in charge of the U21s at the European Championships, has been the favorite since this week. “I’m really in no hurry because we have a good solution internally at the DFB,” DFB Director Oliver Bierhoff announced at a press conference in relation to the search for a coach.
