David Alaba from FC Bayern Munich raved about his former team-mate Mark van Bommel.
“I was able to learn very well from him what it means to be a leader – on and off the pitch,” said Alaba in a video that FC Bayern broadcast on its social networks on the occasion of his upcoming departure at the end of the season.
Van Bommel was one of numerous companions of Alaba who had their say in the course of the video and paid tribute to him with emotional words. After messages from his girlfriend Shalimar Heppner and his father George Alaba, tears even came to his mind.
Alaba played at Bayern from 2010 to 2011 together with the then captain van Bommel. “You could have a lot of fun with him. He was very funny, very easy-going,” recalled Alaba: “I had very good access to him and was able to come to him with questions. He answered them with heart.”
After van Bommel’s departure with FC Bayern, Alaba won the triple twice before refusing to extend his contract, which expired in the summer. It is still unclear where the 28-year-old Austrian is going. Real Madrid are considered the favorites to sign.
