The corona virus is rampant at the traditional Argentinian club River Plate – a total of 20 players have become infected. The situation is so precarious that a field player has to act as goalkeeper in the upcoming Copa Libertadores game against Independiente Santa Fe (Thursday, 2 a.m. CET).
Before the season, the South American football association CONMEBOL had allowed all clubs to register up to 50 players for the Copa Libertadores in view of any corona failures. However, River turned the proposal down and stuck to a 32-man roster.
To the chagrin of River trainer Marcelo Gallardo, all four nominal goalkeepers are among the corona sufferers. Inevitably, a field player will stand between the posts against Santa Fe.
In all likelihood, veteran Enzo Perez will take over this role. The 35-year-old is actually at home in the defensive midfield.
