Marc-Andre ter Stegen (28) won the Spanish Cup for the fifth time with FC Barcelona. The Catalans won the Copa del Rey final against Athletic Bilbao deservedly 4-0 (0-0), for the successful club it was the first title since the 2019 championship and the 31st cup win overall.
All four goals came within twelve minutes – superstar Lionel Messi scored twice.
Bilbao also missed a second chance at their 24th Copa win in two weeks. At the beginning of April, the Basques lost the final of the 2019/20 season, which had been postponed by a year, against Real Sociedad San Sebastian 0-1. Both games took place in Seville without a spectator.
Barca retaliated thanks to goals from Antoine Griezmann (60th), Frenkie de Jong (63rd) and Messi (68th / 72nd) for the defeat in the Supercup against Bilbao in January and increased their record in the King’s Cup. The record champions are followed by Bilbao (23 titles) and Real Madrid (19), and Los Blancos have been waiting for success in Spain’s oldest football competition since 2014.
Ter Stegen, who was hardly tested on Saturday, had won the trophy with Barcelona after moving from Mönchengladbach in the first four years before the series broke in 2019 in the final against Valencia. Bilbao, on the other hand, suffered their sixth final defeat in a row, the previous cup triumph of the old champions dates back to 1984.
