CAN 2022: Comoros qualify for the first time in their history

The Coelacanths snatched a historic qualification for the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations, after their home draw against Tongo on Thursday, March 25.

They only needed one small point. They dreamed of it for a long time. It is now reality. The selection of the Comoros qualified for the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations, after their draw against Congo (0-0), Thursday, March 25. They validate the very first qualification in their history in the competition.

Despite their overall domination, Amir Abdou’s team failed to score, but they obtained this historic qualification, triggering an explosion of joy among the thousand people authorized at the Malouzini stadium.

Since the arrival in 2014 of coach Ami Abdou, of Marseille origin, the Coelacanths have played fourteen matches, including four wins, eight draws and two defeats. They have remained undefeated at home for five years and now occupy 130th place in the FIFA rankings, i.e. 68 places gained between the end of 2013 and 2021. However, the vast majority of the team play in second-zone championships, in Ligue 2, National, National 2 or even National 3.

Next step, therefore: CAN 2022. And why not dream, from now on, of a first or second place in the group stage …
