Caleb Ewan Announces Retirement
MAY 6, 2025 — The world of professional cycling bid farewell to one of its fastest and most beloved riders today, as Australian sprint sensation Caleb Ewan announced his retirement at the age of 30. In a heartfelt message shared on Instagram, Ewan reflected on a career defined by explosive speed, resilience, and an unwavering passion for the sport.
Known as the “Pocket Rocket” for his diminutive frame and powerful sprinting style, Ewan leaves behind an indelible mark on global cycling. Over his 11-year professional career, he amassed an impressive 65 victories, including stage wins in all three Grand Tours—the Tour de France, Giro d’Italia, and Vuelta a España.
Ewan’s rise began in 2014 with Orica-GreenEDGE (now Team Jayco AlUla), where he quickly established himself as one of the most promising young sprinters in the peloton. His early victories were a glimpse of what was to come: dominance in Grand Tours, one-day classics, and prestigious stage races.

Among his greatest achievements were his five Tour de France stage wins between 2019 and 2020, making him one of Australia’s most successful cyclists. He also earned five stage victories in the Giro d’Italia and delivered standout performances at home in the Tour Down Under, where he claimed nine stage wins.
However, the latter part of Ewan’s career was marked by physical and emotional challenges. A difficult 2024 season led to self-reflection and, eventually, a renewed sense of purpose after signing a one-year contract with INEOS Grenadiers in January 2025. The British team provided a supportive environment that allowed him to rediscover his form and joy for racing, with spring victories at Coppi e Bartali and Itzulia Basque Country offering glimpses of his old brilliance.
Yet despite his resurgence, Ewan acknowledged that his inner fire for competition had faded.
“I realized the victories didn’t carry the same weight they once did. I’ve achieved more than I ever dreamed—but now it’s time to listen to my heart,” Ewan said in his announcement.
The cycling world responded with an outpouring of support. Teammates, rivals, and fans praised Ewan’s humility, professionalism, and lasting impact on the sport. His legacy extends beyond his results—Ewan has been a symbol of determination, grace, and sportsmanship, especially for young Australians.
He expressed deep gratitude to his family, his team staff, and his long-time manager, Jason, for their unwavering support. In emotional remarks, he thanked his parents, wife, and children for their sacrifices and love throughout his journey.
Ewan now looks ahead to new opportunities. He plans to remain involved with INEOS Grenadiers in a mentoring capacity and hopes to explore passions beyond cycling—including travel, language learning, and potential business ventures.
As Ewan turns the page on his competitive career, his influence on cycling will endure. From his record-setting sprints to his quiet leadership, Caleb Ewan leaves behind a legacy of excellence and inspiration that will echo through generations of riders to come.
