National coach Stefan Kuntz has nominated the squad for the upcoming U21 European Championship in Hungary and Slovenia. The 16-year-old Youssoufa Moukoko from BVB will also be there for the first time.
Should Moukoko be used, he will replace Florian Wirtz (17) as the youngest player in the history of the U21s.
“With Youssoufa we have an extraordinary talent in Germany that we want to promote carefully and in line with performance. In close consultation with Borussia Dortmund, we decided to nominate him because we think that his participation will benefit both the team and him in development helps, “said Kuntz.
In September Moukoko had played his first game for the U20 team of the DFB, previously he had played for the U16. He would also be eligible to play for Cameroon, but has chosen Germany. In the Bundesliga he scored his third goal in the 13th game for BVB on Saturday.
In the squad for the three preliminary rounds there are three other players in Malick Thiaw (Schalke 04), Mateo Klimowicz (VfB Stuttgart) and Anton Stach (SpVgg Greuther Fürth) who could play for the German U21s for the first time. Ridle Baku (VfL Wolfsburg), who was recently nominated by Joachim Löw, will also travel to Hungary, but Leverkusen’s Wirtz is not part of the squad.
U21 meet Hungary, the Netherlands and Romania
Bayern Munich’s young star Jamal Musiala is not part of the team. The 18-year-old, who only switched from the English FA to the DFB at the beginning of March, played in the European Championship qualification for England’s U21s in the autumn. For two countries, players are not allowed to compete in the same competition.
The German team will meet in Frankfurt / Main on Sunday and travel to Hungary on Monday. The first group game against the hosts is scheduled for Wednesday in Szekesfehervar, the other opponents are the Netherlands (March 27) and Romania (March 30). The knockout round will only take place in May and June.
