BVB defender Mateu Morey may have seriously injured his knee in the DFB Cup semi-final against Holstein Kiel (5-0). In the 71st minute, Morey overstretched his right knee in a misstep in a running duel with Finn Porath without opposing interference and rolled over the grass screaming in pain for minutes.
Morey was treated and then immediately carried from the square to the catacombs on a stretcher to the applause of those present. “Honestly, that didn’t look good,” said a visibly shocked BVB captain Marco Reus after the game in the ARD.
“The injury is probably very bad. It hurts all of us, our thoughts are with Mateu, he is a great boy and we will support him no matter how long it takes,” said Emre Can. Well-being wishes also came from Kiel. “Health is the most important thing. I can only wish you a speedy recovery at this point,” said Fin Bartels
BVB trainer Edin Terzic also looked visibly touched. “It’s brutally difficult. It was a perfect evening up to the 75th minute. You know him as a player, but we as humans. And when you see such a fantastic boy lying on the floor when you hear his reaction, it darkens all evening. We hope the best for him, “said Terzic, confirming that Morey is already on the way to the hospital.
Particularly bitter: Morey was already seriously injured in training at FC Barcelona in 2018, when the doctors diagnosed a meniscus tear in his left knee, which this time is not affected.
BVB youngster Morey: The injury bad luck leased
After the incident, there was an embarrassed silence on the entire field, when the pictures were viewed, fellow players – including Erling Haaland, who was pausing with muscular problems – horrified his hands in front of his face.
How long Morey will be absent from BVB is still unclear. The 21-year-old moved to Borussia Dortmund from FC Barcelona U19 in 2019, but the bad luck with injuries followed him every step of the way in the Ruhr area. After playing up to the first team in the summer preparation, he suffered a shoulder injury and had to take a two-month break.
This season he tore a muscle fiber, but was still on the pitch in 23 competitive games, in the meantime he had even ousted Thomas Meunier as a regular right-back and prepared three goals.
