BVB prevailed 5-0 (5-0) in a memorable cup semi-final against second division Holstein Kiel and will meet RB Leipzig in the final on May 13th. Without top striker Erling Haaland, Dortmund served the hopelessly inferior outsider with five goals in the first round – a novelty in the long history of the cup. The tenth entry of Dortmund into the cup final was overshadowed by the possibly serious knee injury of Mateu Morey.
The short-term failure of top striker Haaland (muscular problems) compensated for BVB coach Terzic with an offensive quartet of Sancho, Hazard, Reus and Reyna, who divided the position in the top position as a false nine, reigned again and again and presented themselves extremely happy to play.
The Kielers had obvious problems with that, did not get any real access to the Dortmund attackers, acted far too passively and so the fair was read after only half an hour. BVB, which was on the one hand brutally effective (7 shots, 5 goals), but also playfully strong, served a hopelessly inferior second division team, who also suffered a few individual dropouts, 5-0 in the first round – a novelty in the Cup history. Never before had a team scored five goals in the first half in a semi-final.
In the course of the first half, BVB repeatedly succeeded in creating depth in the game – sometimes via the first ball on an incoming or evading nine, sometimes via the second ball to the outside on the high full-backs Piszczek or Guerreiro, before either Let Reyna, Reus or Hazard clap and then take off.
Especially Guerreiro played an elementary role as a left-back who kept staying in half-spaces and causing chaos by running movements from the center to the wings.
BVB – Holstein Kiel: The lineups
BVB, who entered the administrative mode in the second round and made numerous changes, thus follows RB Leipzig well into the cup final. On May 13th, Dortmund can win the cup for the fifth time in their tenth final in the Berlin Olympic Stadium. For Leipzig, however, it would be the first title win in the young club’s history. There will be a foretaste of the final on the upcoming Bundesliga matchday (May 8th), when the Saxons will make a guest appearance in the Westfalenstadion.
For Holstein Kiel, the mammoth program in the promotion race continues in the 2nd division: The KSV currently has three games fewer than the leading trio in the 2nd division, but only two points behind third place. Until May 23, the Kiel have to play five more games.
The clear success of Dortmund was overshadowed almost 20 minutes before the end by a possibly serious knee injury to Mateu Morey, who overextended his knee in a running duel and had to be transported away screaming in pain.
Goal: 1-0 Reyna (16th), 2-0 Reyna (23rd), 3-0 Reus (26th), 4-0 Hazard (32nd), 5-0 Bellingham (42nd)
