In Borussia Dortmund’s 2-0 win against 1. FC Union Berlin, Erling Haaland missed several good chances and missed a penalty. Most recently, the 20-year-old was not as effective in front of the box as in his first year at BVB.
It is unclear whether Erling Haaland is annoyed about two things after Borussia Dortmund’s 2-0 win against 1. FC Union Berlin or just resented about one thing. “We have made a clear statement about the Haaland cause. The decision will not be made without Borussia Dortmund. No matter where we end up, Erling will continue to play for us,” said BVB sports director Michael Zorc before the game Sky.
Now there is a game that points the way ahead for Borussia on Saturday in Wolfsburg, to see whether the Champions League will be anything else in the coming year. Haaland wants to play there in each of his career years, he once said. What he has not yet said: whether he would perhaps make an exception if BVB should not move in the table and miss the premier class.
Since there is no clear commitment to his club, one can only speculate to what extent Haaland Zorc’s unmistakable announcement goes against the grain. “Michael Zorc made it clear to us that BVB Erling does not want to sell this summer,” said Haaland’s advisor Mino Raiola the days at Sport1. The less tame following sentence, however, was: “I respect this opinion, but that does not mean that I automatically agree.”
One thing is clear: soon both parties will have planning security, at least in terms of sport, because the season will not last long. The Westphalia have four points to catch up with fourth-placed Eintracht from Frankfurt. Furthermore, because the SGE presented on Tuesday, so that the three-point of BVB on Wednesday evening was eminently important for this season’s goal.
BVB striker Erling Haaland less effective in the end
What Haaland will certainly be concerned with after this game are his six scoring chances, none of which found their way into the box. Most of them were top-class, especially the penalty, which Marco Reus ultimately used to make it 1-0. Haaland has now missed two out of four penalties in the Bundesliga.
“Yes, of course that sucks,” said the Norwegian at the weekend ESPN when asked how he felt his goal doldrums, which lasted around a month and including the national team, seven competitive games. Last Sunday against Bremen he broke the spell and scored twice, but in the end the 20-year-old was not as effective as in his first year in Dortmund.
Of course, this observation has to be put into perspective: Of course, Haaland is still an animal in front of goal, in 2021 alone he scored 13 of his 23 Bundesliga goals. He is still young and a slightly weaker phase in front of the box was allowed to him after his large number of hits. “Of course we always think that Erling scores how he wants, and that in every game. But he is a person – and a young player. There are always times when you don’t score. That is not our problem,” said BVB interim trainer Edin Terzic recently.
In recent games, however, the striker has seen more often that he missed chances, some of which were so high that Haaland would not have been expected to do so. The game luck was not always on his side, against Union now only centimeters were missing from time to time. “We’re used to Erling cleaning things up. That’s why some people were surprised today,” said Terzic on Wednesday.
What Haaland urgently needs to improve on his degree: He should try it with feeling. In most cases he chooses the brute method that goes hand in hand with his physical force, but does not always do justice to the individual closing situation. Adding a little more sensitivity on the ball to his repertoire, not just in front of goal, would make Haaland even more perfect.
In this case, it would be appropriate, at the latest, for Haaland to comment on its future intentions and for the clear statements of those responsible in Dortmund not to stand alone. However: Jadon Sancho, who was equally courted last year, did not do that either.
