Goalkeeper Rafal Gikiewicz from FC Augsburg still hopes to be appointed to the Polish national team at an advanced age as a footballer – and to participate in the EM in the summer.
“I still have the dream,” said the 33-year-old Augsburger Allgemeine: “Nobody can tell me that the national team is over. I still have that in my head.”
Gikiewicz was in the Polish squad for two games in 2019, but was not used. Despite strong performances in the Bundesliga, Poland’s national coach Paulo Sousa did not nominate the goalkeeper for the upcoming international matches and instead relies on Wojciech Szczesny (Juventus Turin), Lukasz Fabianski (West Ham United) and Lukasz Skorupski (FC Bologna).
“It’s not an argument that I’m already 33 years old,” said Gikiewicz: “What matters is what you show on the pitch week after week.” The nomination therefore remains a dream: “Of course I also know which clubs Szczesny and Fabianski are with. But I also play in a Bundesliga club and Augsburg is not that small. I just want to be with the best players from Poland.”
