2nd league: VfL Bochum takes the next step towards promotion – Düsseldorf continues with promotion opportunities

Once again VfL Bochum responded to a defeat with a win and took the next step towards a return to the Bundesliga. A week after the 3-0 defeat at SC Paderborn, the second division leaders defeated Hannover 96 4: 3 (2: 1) and increased their lead over the second SpVgg Greuther Fürth to six points.

Robert Tesche (29th) and Gerrit Holtmann (38th) turned the game around before half-time after the Westphalians fell behind with a goal from 96 captain Dominik Kaiser (22nd). Simon Zoller increased with his 15th goal of the season to 3: 1 (62nd). Marvin Ducksch shortened (67th), Philipp Ochs (90th) equalized. Tesche (90. + 2) gave Bochum victory in a dramatic final phase.

For the eighth time, coach Thomas Reis’s team reacted to a league defeat with a threesome. Hannover have been without a win for eight games.

VfL, who are aiming to return to the Bundesliga after eleven years, apparently needed a wake-up call against guests who were starting off at a very early stage. Kaiser’s goal for the 96 lead was well deserved because the Lower Saxony had created great opportunities every minute: First, Cristian Gamboa saved a shot by Genki Haraguchi for his goalkeeper Manuel Riemann, who had dared a trip to the edge of the box (20th). Then Simon Falette hit the crossbar of the Bochum goal (21st).

Kaiser’s hit had an effect, VfL shifted into forward gear. After a corner from Robert Zulj, Tesche equalized with a head, Holtmann closed an attack that goalkeeper Riemann had initiated with a long pass with the break lead.

Heidenheim moves up to fourth place

1. FC Heidenheim remains in the race for promotion. The team of coach Frank Schmidt came with Jahn Regensburg thanks to high efficiency to a deserved 3-0 (2-0) and moved up to two points on the Hamburger SV on the relegation place.

However, the table remains crooked: The Hanseatic League will play their 29th game this season on Thursday at SV Sandhausen, Heidenheim will host VfL Bochum leaders in their 30th game on Wednesday.

Fortuna Düsseldorf can also continue to hope for a return to the Bundesliga. Uwe Rösler’s team deservedly won 3-0 (1-0) at VfL Osnabrück, which was threatened with relegation. As a result, the Rhinelander shortened the gap to Hamburger SV on the promotion relegation place to four points and climbed to sixth place.

Kristoffer Peterson (37th) scored the lead for the guests. Dawid Kownacki (50th) increased by a penalty kick after video evidence and Marcel Sobottka (67th).
